21 Apr 2011
Discover America's Wondrous Wild West with Tauck in 2011 Discover the vibrant canyons of six of America’s most treasured national parks, all in one incredible journey. The leader in premium escorted tours, Tauck has collaborated with legendary filmmaker, Ken Burns to develop an exclusive itinerary that explores the big six; the Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, Zion and Grand Canyon national parks.

Tauck’s 10-day Spirit of the Desert: The National Parks of the Southwest tour commences in Moab, Utah with a welcome dinner and three-night stay at Red Cliffs Lodge. Guests will be free to take advantage of this prime location and witness a spectacular sunrise in the Windows section of Arches National Park, home to the world’s largest concentration of natural sandstone arches before embarking on a guided tour of the park and a whitewater rafting adventure along the Colorado River. Guests will also explore the northern district of Canyonlands National Park and visit the famous Mesa Arch before a sunset picnic dinner at Dead Horse Point, overlooking the Colorado River. An inspiring lecture by a local Navajo will connect guests to the sacredness of the desert and a visit to Moab’s Film Museum will offer insights into the multitude of films created in Moab over the past 70 years.

A scenic flight offers amazing panoramic views of Waterpocket Fold and the sandstone sculptures of Capitol Reef National Park en route to the towering rock pinnacles of Bryce National Park. With an overnight stay at The Lodge at Bryce Canyon, early risers can embark on a walk along the Canyon’s rim and discover some of the world’s most whimsical geological formations.

The tour then continues to the steep canyon walls of Zion National Park, where guests can view the vividly coloured rock formations and waterfalls on guided walks to Weeping Rock and the Court of the Patriarchs. A two-night stay at the Zion Lodge provides time to discover the red cliffs and wilderness surroundings of the Zion Canyon before travelling to the Northern Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. A two-night stay at The Grand Canyon Lodge – North Rim offers guests an intimate setting to discover this UNESCO World Heritage Site carved over millions of years by the Colorado River. The group will experience a memorable flight over the extraordinary Grand Canyon as they travel to lively Las Vegas, where the tour ends with a farewell cocktail party and dinner.

A number of Tauck exclusives feature on the tour, including filmed vignettes by Ken Burns and his long-time collaborator Dayton Duncan who share their personal journeys and the stories of those who shaped the creation and preservation of the National Parks; two flight-seeing adventures; memorable sunrise and sunset experiences with optional Dawn Patrol and Sunset Scouts, and special talks and lectures by local experts associated with Ken’s award-winning documentary ‘The National Parks: America’s Best Idea’.

With departures available from May to October 2011, Tauck’s 10-day Spirit of the Desert: The National Parks of the Southwest tour is priced from AU$4,390 per person, twin share, and includes accommodation.
