Once every ten years the Passionsspiele (Passion Play), a dramatic recreation of the last days of Christ, is performed by 1,700 local residents of the small German town of Oberammergau. One of Germany's oldest festivals, the play was first performed 375 years ago; it's now performed every ten years at the start of a new decade. The year 2010 promises to be one of the most important seasons as it marks the end of the first decade of the new millennium.
The Oberammergau Passion Play
A play of life and death, promised in a moment of mortal threat - so began the history of the Oberammergau Passion Play in 1633. In the middle of the Thirty Years War, after months of suffering and death from the plague, the Oberammergauers swore an oath that they would perform the "Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years. At Pentecost 1634, they fulfilled their pledge for the first time on a stage they put up in the cemetery above the fresh graves of the plague victims. In the year 2000, the Community of Oberammergau performed the Passion Play they have preserved throughout the centuries with singular continuity for the 40th time.
The Passion Play Today
In this spirit, during a work period of several years, text and music were fundamentally revised, new settings and costumes were designed and a new production was created in countless rehearsals. Now, more than 2,000 Oberammergauers, actors, singers, instrumentalists and stage technicians bring to the stage those events Christianity regards as its central source of life and hope in approximately six hours of playing time.
Tauck World Discovery is currently finalising a selection of tours for 2010 featuring two nights at Oberammergau including a performance of the Passion Play. In addition to Romantic Germany (14 days) and Alpine Interlude (12 days), more tours are under consideration.
The last time the Passion Play was performed, in the year 2000, Tauck's tours filled very, very quickly. The Passion Play is performed for 5 months only (May–October) – so don't delay in making your reservation early to guarantee your preferred departure date.
