Glennie Cooper, of Sydney, talks to the Discerning Traveller’s editor Merry Kirkwood, about her recent Tauck Grand Autumn New England Tour.
Q: Travelling around Boston and New England for 11 days in autumn must have been very scenic. What was the visual highlight?
I love America! And I have been a little spoilt, given my late husband was involved in the travel industry. I cried at the scenery it was so beautiful, and the Americans on tour thought I was mad … in a good way. I enjoyed the spectacular horse racing in Vermont, and Lake Placid was lovely.
Q: Your tour took you in a loop of the region. How did you move about each day?
We moved about in comfortable coaches, and with only twenty or so people as it was a small group departure tour, it was very roomy. The staff collects all your luggage, so it’s seamless.
Q: Did your Tauck Director play a big part in your experience?
She was a lovely woman, and played a big part in the tour, but I also enjoyed the ‘expert’ who joined the coach each day, and gave us local insights. Their research impressed me – we learnt something new each day.
Q: You stayed at most hotels for a couple of nights at a time on this tour. What were they like?
I loved the variety. In Boston we stayed at The Langham – which is what I call a ‘proper’ hotel. But I most loved Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa near Lake Placid, which was covered in traditional white weatherboards, and had gardens that spilled all the way to the water.
Q: Did the mix of tours and free-time work for you? Why?
Each day, we did not go too far, and also had free time. It was relaxing. I was fascinated visiting a spectacular cranberry bog and enjoyed sailing in Newport.
Q: Have you taken a Tauck holiday before? Would you consider doing another Tauck tour?
I would thoroughly recommend a Tauck tour – it was exceptional. I have been on, and enjoyed, some of their other history tours, but this one was very, very good.
